Position Summary
The Vascular Access Assistant (VAA) is a phlebotomist with specialized training to perform intravascular blood specimen collection. The VAA assists the Vascular Access Specialist (VAS) in the preparation and implementation of vascular access devices (VAD) on patients ranging in age from neonates through adulthood. The VAA will collaborate with the healthcare team, the patient and their family to deliver the most appropriate care and minimize discomfort based upon clinical need and developmental parameters. The Vascular Access Service department responds to vascular access needs of patients in all areas of the healthcare organization including inpatient, outpatient, surgical, emergency and ambulatory departments.
Education
- Completion of a course of study leading to a high school diploma or equivalent. (Required)
- Completion of a phlebotomy course resulting in an active certification in phlebotomy. (Required)
Experience
- Minimum one year experience working as a phlebotomist with pediatric populations. (Required)
Certifications
- Current National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) designation. (Preferred)
- Current BLS certification from American Heart Association. (Required)
Special Skills
- Phlebotomy experience within a pediatric population (Preferred)
- High level skill in critical thinking related to phlebotomy. (Required)
- Ability to work with minimal to moderate supervision. (Required)
- Excellent communication and teaching skills. (Required)
- Willingness to maintain and improve knowledge level related to vascular access with seminars, magazines, books, journals and available media options. (Required)
