This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Learn more Echocardiography Technician works under the general supervision of the Supervisor of the Cardiology Imaging Section and Chief of the Cardiology Section to assure optimal quality control, efficient coordination of exams and follow ups (as required), high quality diagnostic exam results and patient satisfaction. They are also involved in interview processes of hiring new technicians. MIT - Echocardiographers at this grade level: A. Responsible for the processing and prioritization of requisitions to the echocardiogram lab. He/She must have an increased knowledge of disease processes and symptomatology to adequately determine the appropriate prioritization of each request. This is frequently done independently and at times requires relaying information to the physician and patient care providers to provide diagnostic assistance when needed. He/She is responsible for the evaluation of all equipment and the techniques for the echocardiography lab. B. Ensures that the patients are scheduled and have appointments in a timely manner. He/She insures that the patients are checked into the CP User program prior to the initiation of the study. Check into CP User verifies patient demographics into the ultrasound system. A pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data is obtained to facilitate optimal diagnostic results. Monitors patient vital signs, blood pressure, and cardiac rhythm, in which, can determine abnormalities independently and reports these abnormalities to the Cardiology Attending or Cardiology Fellows. C. In the Echocardiogram Lab performs M-Mode, 2 Dimensional and 3 dimensional scans on the heart. Color Doppler and Pulsed Wave Doppler and Tissue Doppler acquisitions are also performed. Exercise Stress Testing and Pharmacologic Stress Testing as well as ergonomic bicycle stress testing are also performed. Transesophageal Echocardiogram testing is also performed. The incumbent must be an expert in the recognition of cardiac and aortic anatomy. The technician must use this knowledge to provide standard views to assess the anatomical and physiological cardiac parameters that need to be studied. At the discretion of the technician the non-standard views and investigation may be required to delineate the findings or address the concerns raised as to the patient's cardiac function in regards to assessing wall motion, valvular function, and the presence or absence of abnormal structures or masses. This technical judgment is critical in providing the data base for appropriate interpretation and review. D. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergent procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate them. Maintains the PACS reading station to insure that all studies transfer appropriately. Consults with patient demographics are given to the attending cardiologist for proper interpretation. E. Receives patients, explains method of procedure, and prepares the patient for examination. After reviewing the patient's chart, determines the method of scanning to be used and makes the necessary machine adjustments and transducer selection appropriate for the exam. F. Routinely devises innovative and adaptive approaches to technical problems while working with patients to include adjustments of equipment and technique. Solving these problems is done independently so that the patients are not delayed or require repeating of exams. G. Writes policies and competencies, participates in the preparation of Joint Commission site visits and/or lab accreditations, evaluates and initiates performance improvement projects, assists the supervisor in writing lab and scanning procedures, protocols and policies for Quality Assurance and IAC accreditation, assists with special projects and database operations. H. Is the primary educator for all Cardiac fellows. Is responsible for instructing the fellows on proper acquisition techniques and image acquisition. Assists medical students and house staff with the basic interpretations of cardiac disease. Orients students to different techniques including those standards and methods of interpretation developed by the technician through experience and research.
