Construction of the Children's Hospital was completed in February 2013. The scheduled completion of three additional floors by November 2020, may allow for further expansion of the Pediatric ICU. The clinical program encompasses an 18 bed high-acuity multidisciplinary pediatric intensive care unit, which includes an integrated Pediatric Cardiac Care Unit. Clinical programs include cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, a level 1 trauma program, solid organ and stem cell transplantation, and all aspects of pediatric critical care medicine including extracorporeal support in a highly collaborative atmosphere. Highly specialized care in the PICU and Pediatric Cardiac Care Unit is provided by subspecialty-trained physicians, critical care fellows, pediatric critical care practitioners and a dedicated nursing and respiratory therapy staff. An 18 bed Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit within the Children’s Hospital accommodates lower acuity patients which are cared for by a different group of medical and surgical pediatric subspecialists.
The Division sponsors both a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship and Nurse Practitioner Program. The fellowship, nurse practitioner program, pediatric residency, and subspecialty residencies, along with the adjacent medical school provides a vast array of educational opportunities.
Penn State Children’s Hospital and the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine are active participants in Virtual PICU and the Solutions for Patient Safety. VPS data has consistently demonstrated that the standardized mortality ratio as adjusted via PRISM 3 has been persistently lower than the VPS comparison / reference group.
The Children’s Hospital, Division of Pediatric Critical Care, contiguous Medical School, and Penn State’s Main Campus offer a number of excellent opportunities to collaboratively perform research. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Penn State Children’s Hospital is an active member of The Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) Network, and participates in multicenter clinical research trials in brain injury, lung injury, sepsis, and pharmacology. The Department of Pediatrics and College of Medicine are committed to supporting the development of young pediatric investigators.
